Your question: Death of a child or loved one
“I have dreamt that my child dies in a dream. Does this mean it’s going to happen?”
It can be very common to dream about losing people you love because you love them. You may fear their loss and this anxiety manifests in your dreams.
Death can also represent change – you may have noticed something different about the person you have dreamt has died; in their behaviour, their looks or their outlook on life.
To dream of losing children is common at particular stages of their lives, often around the ages of 2-3, 6-7 and 11-13. This is usually because at these ages you start to notice a change in your little one, in that they’re not so little anymore!
So, at the age of a toddler you may begin to recognise they are no longer babies, at the age of 6-7 you may see the first real signs of independence (e.g. wanting to stay over at a friends house or buy things you may not approve of!), and at the age of puberty they are in that ‘in between phase’ of not being a child anymore and not being an adult either. So the death in the dream, can represent their transition in to different life stages and our reaction to these changes; losing what they once were to how they now are.
If your dreams are becoming a problem in terms of how well you’re sleeping, pop along to see your doctor. In the meantime, you may find the page on nightmares useful.
