The movie Inception, starring Leonardo DiCaprio (Warner Bros) released in 2010, is an interesting concept covering the world of dreaming. The main idea behind the film is that you can appear in another person’s dream. But is this possible?
Yes. Mutual Dreaming is well documented by researchers and scientists. It is possible for two people to have the same dream and for two people to appear in each others dream. This is usually done with forward planning (rather than by mistake) and the venue of the dream is decided before going to sleep.
Sometimes mutual dreaming just ‘happens’ but is particularly likely between two best friends, mother/daughter or people with a special connection. (If you plan to try this make sure you feel safe with your dream partner, by planning the event and having mutual agreement on the arrangements).
The movie also covers the idea of a dream within a dream; again this can happen. You yourself may have had a dream where you’ve dreamt you’ve woken up, then woken up.
The story behind the movie itself is that in this case the mutual dream is one of espionage – the spies do not have the dreamer’s consent and infiltrate his Mind so he is influenced by the characters that appear in his dreams. They did this using a hypothetical piece of equipment called a PASIV machine and for this reason this is not possible.
You are not usually lucid and are not likely to know you have shared a dream with someone unless or until you discuss it when you next see them (when you’re awake). In the movie, the dreamers were lucid and therefore in control of their actions.
If you’re thinking about trying this, be under no illusion: mutual dreaming – just like lucid dreaming – can take extreme effort to master. Remember your dreams can be useful to you without you telling them where to go. So for now, enjoy your dream experiences without controlling them and reap the rewards of their messages – leaving the Mutual Dreaming to the movies.
Take a look at some common dreams.
Enjoy.
